We keep getting new toll roads, new light rail and plenty of new bike lanes, but very little has been done to fix our free roads over the years. With most not having had any upgrade, or even resurfacing for over 30 years! Over that time the amount of traffic that uses our roads has multiplied several times and our roads are now in disarray. We pay our registration fees, taxes and levies and we believe it should not just be to finance the building of more toll roads but to also maintain and improve our free roads.

The reason given for vehicle import taxes being introduced in Australia was to protect our local car manufacturing industry from overseas imports. However, there is no longer a car manufacturing industry in Australia left to protect, which means there is now no longer a valid reason for maintaining vehicle import taxes and they should be reviewed.

The Motorists Party has a commitment is to helping reduce Australia's road toll. However, we believe the burden should not be put on motorists alone. Commuting during a pandemic is far safer in a private vehicle than on public trans[ort. Maintaining social distancing or avoiding touching surfaces that may be contaminated is not easy to do catching a bus or train. It's great to see motorists maintaining social distancing while driving 😀

While motorists worldwide may well be blamed for much of the emissions contributing to climate change, we've found the vast majority of city motorists would prefer to drive cleaner, non polluting vehicles and not contribute to climate change at all. Governments need to take action to allow and even promote for this to happen. Without policy, guidance and incentives driving the move to renewables motorists are left with little choice other than to continue to purchase fossil fuel burning vehicles.

Currently, Australia spends over b a year buying oil from overseas. Money that's lining the pockets of oil producing countries and not ours. That's a heck of a lot of money that could be staying in Australia if we had alternatives such as electric powered vehicles and renewable energies. Governments constantly have their hands in motorist's pockets. Whether its import duties, tariffs and customs to local councils with exorbitantly priced parking, punishing fines and relentless parking rangers, to state and federal governments who use tax money motorists have already paid to them to build new toll roads that we then have to pay again to use. Governments and councils actively discourage cars parking in the CBD and inner suburbs. And minimise the number of cars coming into them by increasing costs to Motorists. We don't agree with their policies. We believe motorist's should have good affordable roads and parking and not be pushed to using public transport or expensive toll roads just to get to and from work.
